About Marlow
Marlow, in Buckinghamshire, was initially a river crossing and its most famous landmark is the 19th century suspension bridge, designed by William Tierney Clark, who used almost the same design for his much larger Széchenyi Chain Bridge bridge linking Buda and Pest in Hungary. Marlow is also famous for the house where Mary Shelley completed Frankenstein, as well as for Dr. Battie, who designed Court Garden House in Higginson Park. He forgot to include a staircase, hence the expression “batty.” Marlow has a museum in the park and a lock and weir dating from the 14th century. Other claims to fame for Marlow are that Jerome K. Jerome wrote part of Three Men in a Boat at a local pub, the Two Brewers and that Marlow Bottom, where Ryemead Commercial Cleaning is based, has become the home of quintuple Olympic gold medallist rower Steve Redgrave, Britain’s only athlete to have won gold medals at five consecutive Olympics. Higginson Park features a bronze statue of Sir Steven looking across the river towards the location of the finishing line of the Marlow Town Regatta. He is also commemorated in Redgrave Place.
